How Much Can People Really Change?

Cuellar, Erick

Change, it is what can bring either a positive or a negative outcome. Change can happen anywhere, anytime, at a moments notice. People change all the time, whether they change physically like height and facial appearance, or they change based on their actions and how they act or behave. The question is how much can a person really change?

To further express the fact that people do change I am going to explain how much I’ve changed over the years and what engaged that change or the initiative to make the change. I have for many years, been the quiet type, shy, not talkative, whatever you want to call it, I was that person. I was never involved in anything that pushes me out of my comfort zone and I did not like to be part of big conversations. I have been like this ever since elementary school but from freshman year in high school and so on, I started to see some minor changes.

Later on I enlisted in the Marine Corps on July 31, 2019, and that is when I noticed drastic changes in the way I talk, the way I act and behave, and even in my physique. I have learned and acquired the 14 leadership traits according to the Marine Corps and I abide by them and try to use them in my everyday life. I have become more responsible and a bit more talkative, but I never lost my humbleness. Before I never would’ve run for any position in anything and now I am Secretary in Principles of Leadership and I, along with my fellow candidates, actually decide what the rest of the class does and the due dates we want them to turn assignments in. We also set up professional and community service events and this role requires accountability and responsibility. In addition to that I also got selected to represent East Tech at the 2019 SUN Youth Forum which sounds really fun and is pretty awesome to be honest.

I have changed a lot and I haven’t even realized it; I remember telling my mom about all these things I’ve been doing and the things I have accomplished and she said: “Who are you?” That is how you now that change is upon you and that can be good for not only you but the people around you. When you do what you are meant to do you will, without a doubt recognize the positive changes in you and your life! If I can change, so can you!
