FCCLA Students Win Big!

The State Conference for the Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) took place in Reno, Nevada from March 7th through the 10th. Forty of East Career and Technical Academy’s FCCLA members attended, 17 receiving gold medals, 31 receiving silver medals, and 9 receiving bronze medals.

Nineteen of these forty students were asked to attend the National FCCLA Leadership Conference being held in Nashville, Tennessee this summer from July 2nd through the 6th.

Students Karen Lopez and Dara Colon Murillo won gold medals in the “Focus on Children” event, and Murillo won a silver medal in the “Illustrated Talk” event, along with an invitation to the FCCLA National Leadership Conference.

Freshmen Kiera Petit and Cassandra Grochala were participants in the Innevations Competition, in which they were required to incorporate a vegetable into their recipes, Petit creating cinnamon rolls using sweet potatoes and Grochala baking a muffin using golden raisins and carrots.

Ashley Hassler, Arturo Cejas, Maygan Konruff, Nicole Ibarra, Tania Saldamando, and Taylor Chan all were participants in the Cupcake Competition. Chan, Hassler, and Konruff also received gold medals and were invited to participate at the National Leadership Conference taking place in July.          

Jhayson Garcia and Efrain Garcia were participants in the Culinary Food Art Competition, which is an individual event where each competitor has the opportunity to show off their artistic side using fruit and vegetable designs.

ECTA’s FCCLA Career and Technical Organization (CTSO) was recognized again for being the biggest chapter in attendance, and was then given certificates for increasing the CTSO’s membership.

All FCCLA members have the opportunity to win different scholarships at state and national competitions in order to make it easier in pursuing their postsecondary education.
