American Red Cross: Blood Drive to Kick off the Year!

Vanessa Antonio, Amanda Alibangbang

The American Red Cross is hosting a blood drive at East Career and Technical Academy on January 26th, 2016. The blood drive will begin at 7:30 AM and end at 1:15 PM.  It will be held in the banquet hall, located in the culinary building. Students can sign up through the American Red Cross Club or during lunch on stage in the cafeteria.

There are certain requirements in order to donate blood. Requirements include having an overall well health and there are weight stipulations that differ between females and males. Females have to weigh more because they can faint more easily than males! For example, if a female were to be 5’1’’, they would have to be a minimum of 135 pounds and if a female were to be 5’10” they would have to be at least 115 pounds. Males only  have to weigh 115 pounds. Students who are 16 years old must have a signed waiver from a parent.  If you are  17 or older,  you are not  required to have signed content.  Also, all students must have a teacher’s consent that allows them to go during the class period.
This is East Tech’s 3rd year hosting blood drives. On average, about  90 people sign up, but usually  only 40-60 actually donate.  Mrs. Rojas, the head coordinator of American Red Cross Club at East Tech, expects this blood drive to be excellent and hopes that 100% of the students who sign up, donate.  There is no need to be nervous! The people who draw blood  are certified through the American Red Cross and are usually technicians and nurses. The blood from the students is distributed to all 13 hospitals throughout the valley.  It really is a great cause!  Take Mrs. Rojas’s advice, “It is not about getting excused from class but giving back to the community!”
