The Rise of “Anne With an E”

Out of the many shows to grace this era, one hidden gem is the Netflix original series Anne With an E. It is set in the early 20th century Prince Edward Island, Canada. This series revolves around the young redheaded Anne Shirley (played by Amybeth McNulty), who is adopted by an elderly pair of siblings, and all her shenanigans over the years.

While the series is based off of the beloved Anne of Green Gables novels by Lucy Maud Montgomery, fans of the original books as well as other older films and television adaptations may find that this story stands out tremendously from the others. As opposed to the novel’s more iconic and innocent adaptations, such as those starring Megan Follows back in 1985, this 3-season series brings up topics of racism, classism, homophobia, and sexism. Its brutal realism, as well as its cinematography and cast, is what has attracted a small yet powerful fanbase.

The third season of the show was released on Netflix US at the beginning of this month, while its joint provider CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Corporation) streamed an episode weekly. It was on November 24, 2019, when fans rejoiced at the closure in the streamed season 3 finale when it was publicly announced thereafter that the show was cancelled. Fans everywhere posted of their shock and anger. Even the cast and crew were unaware of this decision and found out as everyone else did, on an Instagram post.

Since then, fans have rioted, declaring that their voices “will not be silenced,” as referred to in an episode of the series carrying a protest. The show’s creator Moira Walley-Beckett has made several announcements advising against these advances, as they are all in vain. A part of one post’s caption reads:

“As hard as it is to face letting go of things we love (and we’ve loved this journey of making ANNE WITH AN E as much as you have loved watching it) there is just no way to revive ANNE WITH AN E anywhere at this point. It will not happen. So now we need to love all that exists of it and hold onto the joy and hope and wonder the show brought to all of us who worked on it, and all of you who watched it. And when you have a longing for Green Gables, know that you can return to it and it will always be there for you. ANNE WITH AN E will live forever in our hearts – as will you, our beloved fans 🧡Your Kindred Spirits, Moira and Miranda 🧡🌿🦉🦊”

Despite this, fans everywhere have been retweeting “Anne With an E season 4” tags on Twitter and Instagram in an attempt to convince Netflix and CBC to pick the show back up. At the same time, the fight for renewal has gained the support of celebrities such as Ryan Reynolds and have even been contacting other streaming sites such as Disney Plus to pick the show back up. The fight continues to this day.
